Govt suppresses oppositions to go to power by lopsided election: Rizvi
The government is suppressing the opposition parties in order to go to power again by holding another one-sided election, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said today.
"The Awami League government is trying to conduct another lopsided election by resorting to a harsh crackdown on the opposition party. But the opportunity for such an approach is over; it will not be possible again this time," Rizvi said in a statement on Friday (10 November).
He said, "The ruling regime is creating a terrible situation in the country through enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, maiming, torture, ill-treatment, and extensive arbitrary detentions."
Mentioning that the government is afraid of its downfall in the ongoing mass movement, the BNP leader said, "They [government] are engaging in severe anti-human activities such as enforced disappearances, alongside suppressing and apprehending innocent individuals, including leaders and members of the opposition party."
He went on to say that the people, discontented with the misrule of the "illegal government", have now taken to the streets with a commitment bordering on life and death.
"The people of the country pledged not to retreat until the establishment of a non-partisan, impartial government," he added.
Rizvi alleged that the former organising secretary of Dhaka district unit of BNP, Rezaul Kabir, was apprehended from his residence in Dhanmondi by plainclothes law enforcement personnel.
He expressed deep concern and condemned the incident.
