Interim govt failing to be neutral in some regards: Mirza Fakhrul
Stating that the country had been deprived of elections for almost 15 years, the BNP leader said through the upcoming polls the people would once again get the chance to appoint a representative
The interim government is failing to play a neutral role in some regards, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today (23 January), urging it to be neutral.
Speaking at a discussion on the 56th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Asad at the National Press Club, in response to a question, he said, "I have said a neutral government is needed because we see the government isn't able to play the neutral role in some issues. I request and hope it is able to do so and fulfil its responsibility to free the country from the crisis."
Stating that the country had been deprived of elections for almost 15 years, the BNP leader said through the upcoming polls the people would once again get the chance to appoint a representative.
"If the issue [of polls] is now forced to become controversial, then the people will again be deprived of their voting rights. We have seen from our experience that if such elections are not held quickly, if time is wasted, then other forces start to rise up," said Fakhrul.
He reiterated that they had high expectations from the interim government.
"But in the situation that has arisen, it's true that we are still not sure whether our expectations will be met," Fakhrul said.
He said during different programmes of political parties, each agreed that an election must be held.
On the reform issue, he said, "Will we wait for 4-5 years? Will the people have to wait until all the reforms are made? They will be deprived of their right to vote."
