Jamaat, Islami Andolan hail HC verdict reinstating caretaker govt system
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) today (17 December) welcomed the High Court's decision to scrap the sections of the constitution's 15th Amendment that abolished the caretaker government system.
In a statement, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said, "The people's voting rights have been re-established through the High Court's verdict. This is another victory of the people.
"We extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the countrymen for re-establishing voting rights through this legal battle."
He also said, "On 30 June 2011, the 15th Amendment to the constitution was passed in the National Parliament. Through this amendment, the people's voting rights and the election system were completely destroyed. Through this amendment, the tendency of seizing power without a vote was created.
"As a result, no elections were held in Bangladesh in 2014, 2018 and 2024. Elections were just a joke. Basically, democracy and the democratic system were destroyed through the 15th Amendment."
Meanwhile, during a discussion at IAB's office in Dhaka, IAB Secretary General Principal Hafez Maulana Yunus Ahmad said the verdict to repeal the 15th Amendment has been a step forward in fulfilling the people's expectations in establishing the people's voting rights.
"The verdict has brought relief to the people as the caretaker government system has been restored," he said.
He also demanded repealing all the amendments made during the Awami League regime.
Earlier in the day, the High Court has scrapped a few sections of the 15th Amendment including those which abolished the caretaker government system stating that it is the will of the whole nation.
The High Court bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy gave the verdict after hearing two writ petitions filed in this regard.
