Political party formation under state sponsorship will decrease govt's acceptability: Rizvi
Election roadmap given by the interim government is a prolonged one that the people did not expect, says the senior BNP leader
The interim government's acceptability will decrease if political parties are formed under state sponsorship, said the BNP's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today (20 December).
"Everyone has the right to form a political party. However, if the party is sponsored by the state, the acceptability of the government will decrease. Participants in the democratic movement must respect the values of democracy," he told reporters after meeting the families of July uprising martyrs in the capital's Mohammadpur.
The senior BNP leader also said, "If local representatives who were elected under the influence of the fallen dictatorship and all other criminals join or form any political party, it will be a party of criminals. The people of Bangladesh are quite aware in this regard."
He further said the election roadmap given by the interim government is a prolonged roadmap that the people did not expect.
On 16 December, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said the next general election can be held between the end of 2025 and the first half of 2026 after accomplishing necessary state reforms and a commission will be formed soon to build a national consensus, engaging with political parties.
Calling on the interim government to proceed with caution, Rizvi said, "History will not forgive any mistakes. If the interim government fails, the country's independence and sovereignty could be jeopardised."
Claiming that the BNP has participated in all the movements of the country, Rizvi said, "BNP has never backed down from movements. Many have done many things but BNP has never achieved party interests.
"BNP is a party which is proud to be part of every achievement of the nation."
