'We have forgiven those who persecuted us politically': Jamaat chief
He says journos should work alongside politicians to establish justice
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami does not believe in revenge politics and has forgiven those who persecuted them politically, the party's Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said today.
However, if any victim or victim's family takes legal recourse, the party will support them, he said during a meeting with reporters in Tejgaon in the capital yesterday.
He also urged the media to portray politics in a manner that is positively motivated rather than through vindication.
To guarantee the rights of all citizens, media workers and politicians must work together, the Jamaat chief said, adding that the objective will be liberation and welfare of the masses.
He further said that in the recent past, the pens of media and media workers were blocked. "It is now unlocked, even if temporarily. We have to work together to maintain this streak."
Referring to the duties and responsibilities of journalists, he said they should work alongside politicians to bring about change in the society and establish justice.
"Just as politicians die on the streets, so do journalists," he said, urging media workers to fulfil their professional responsibilities independently.
