Writ seeks cancellation of Dhaka-10 by-election results
The petition has been filed owing to a poor turnout of voters amid coronavirus fears
A writ petition was filed on Sunday at the High Court challenging the results of the Dhaka-10 by-election.
The petition, filed by a Supreme Court lawyer named Yunus Ali Akand, sought a directive from the apex court to cancel the election results and hold the by-election again.
The chief election commissioner and secretaries to the local government ministry and the law ministry have been made respondents in the writ.

The petitioner said a High Court bench is likely to hear on the writ petition this week.
As per the Constitution, the by-polls could have been deferred because of coronavirus. If it had been deferred, more people would have come to cast their votes, he added.

Awami League-backed candidate Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, was unofficially declared elected after getting 15,955 votes in the by-polls held on Saturday. Among the other contestants, BNP-backed Sheikh Robiul Alam Robi came second with 817 votes. The total voter turnout was only 5.28 percent.
