Rape on JU campus: 4 including BCL leader remanded for 3 days
Four individuals, including a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), were remanded for three days in a case filed over the rape of a woman on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus.
Dhaka's Senior Judicial Magistrate Rabeya Begum on Sunday passed the remand order when Mizanur Rahman, sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station, produced them before the court with a seven-day remand prayer, reports UNB.
The accused are Mostafizur Rahman, international affairs secretary of JU unit BCL; Sabbir Hasan Sagar, Sagar Siddique, and Hasanuzzaman.
Earlier on 3 February, Mostafizur and Mamun allegedly raped a woman near Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall while keeping her husband locked in a room in the dormitory.
A case was filed against six people at Ashulia Police Station and police arrested four of them. The key suspect Mostafizur Rahman was arrested yesterday.
"The victim has been sent to the One-Stop Crisis Center at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for a medical examination," said Abdullah Hil Kafi, Dhaka district's additional police super (Crime and Ops and Traffic North division), at a press conference on Sunday.
"Mamun rented a room in our house. When my husband visited the JU campus with him on Saturday, Mamun told him that he would be staying with Mostafizur at Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall for a few days," said the victim.
"My husband then called me over the phone and told me to bring some of Mamun's clothes to the campus. When I went there, they took me to the jungle near Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall and said my husband would arrive there. Then Mostafizur and Mamun raped me at the place," she added.
JU takes action
In an emergency syndicate meeting held on Sunday, the JU authority withheld certificates of six students and suspended three of them.
A four-member committee has also been formed to investigate the incident, JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Nurul Alam told reporters after the meeting.
The students whose certificate issuance was stopped are Mostafizur Rahman, a student of the international relations department, Murad Hossain, Shah Paran, Mostafa Monowar Siddiqui, and Md Hasanuzzaman of the same department, and Sabbir Hasan of the Botany department.
Murad, Mustafa, and Sabbir have also been suspended.
Notices will be circulated instructing non-students to leave the dormitories, he added.
The administration's steps come after a group of teachers and students of JU staged a demonstration in front of the Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall in protest at the incident. They demanded a thorough investigation and punishment for the culprits.
