Recommendations for ACC reform to be submitted by 31 Dec: Iftekharuzzaman
ACC Reform Commission began its work on 3 Oct
The recommendations for reforming the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will be submitted by 31 December, said Iftekharuzzaman, the chief of the ACC Reform Commission and executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), today.
"ACC is currently held hostage by political influence and bureaucracy. To transform it into an ideal institution, it must be freed from all forms of external pressure," he said during a press briefing following the first meeting of the reform commission held at the TIB office in Dhaka.
He highlighted that a complete overhaul of the ACC is essential, including amendments to the sections of the law that the commission finds problematic.
Iftekharuzzaman said that feedback from all relevant stakeholders would be taken into consideration while drafting the recommendations.
Earlier, the interim government formally constituted five separate commissions to oversee reforms in public administration, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the judiciary, the police, and the election system.
The Cabinet Division issued separate gazette notifications on 3 October in this regard.
According to the gazettes, the commissions began their work on the same day and are required to submit their reform recommendations within 90 days.
Other members of the ACC Reform Commission are Masud Ahmed, former comptroller and auditor general; Prof Mobasser Monem of Public Administration department at Dhaka University; Prof Mushtaq Khan from SOAS University of London; Barrister Mahdin Choudhury; Prof Mahbubur Rahman of Law department at Dhaka University; Supreme Court lawyer Farzana Sharmin; and a student representative.
The Cabinet Division will provide secretarial support to the commission.
