Renovated ICT infrastructure ushers in new era for July uprising trials: CJ
The renovation of the International Crimes Tribunal's (ICT) physical infrastructure marks a new chapter in the trial of mass killings and crimes against humanity during the July uprising, Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed said today.
After inaugurating the renovated "Old High Court Building," which houses the ICT, and its courtrooms, he said the ongoing trials of atrocities committed during the student-led mass upheaval would bring a new dimension to the tribunal by ensuring transparency, adherence to proper legal procedures, and upholding the principles of justice.
Expressing his expectations for the tribunal, the chief justice said, "The general public places immense trust and hope in the ICT to deliver justice for the mass killings and crimes against humanity committed to suppress the collective will of the nation."
"I, too, share the same expectations, with unwavering faith in the tribunal's commitment to justice," he added.
ICT Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, and ICT Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam were also present, among others.
Currently, the tribunal is conducting trials of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, along with several cabinet members and government officials from her tenure, on charges of mass killings and crimes against humanity.
