According to the presentation made by Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), a river dredging research institute, flood and waterlogging problems have increased in this region due to the poor navigability of the rivers, which is also hampering riverine communication. The salinity of the region has also increased exponentially with the decrease in water flow in the rivers.
The navigability of the rivers will be significantly improved once the project is implemented. A 2,300-km riverway will be developed under this project, which will ensure safe river transportation and proper riverine use.
BIWTA Chairman, Commodore Golam Sadeq said that people of the southwest region, especially impoverished communities will be benefited tremendously by the restoration of navigability in the rivers.
Khulna City Mayor, Talukder Abdul Khalek will take steps to compensate locals impacted by the river dredging and soil filling.
