Revolution was not only for elections but also for reforms: Hasnat Abdullah
The July-August mass uprising was not only to re-establish people's right to vote but also to demand reforms in the government, said Hasnat Abdullah, a key coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
"Elections are part of the reform process. An acceptable Election Commission will be constituted only through reforms. Reforms and elections are running on the same track," he told journalists today (18 November) in Patuakhali after visiting the grave of Shaheed Jihad, who was killed in the student movement.
Hasnat also said Awami League and Jatiyo Party should not be allowed to take part in elections before their partymen face trials for their misdeeds.
"They have nurtured fascism in the last three elections. After the trial of all their misdeeds is completed, the students and citizens will decide whether they will come to the polls or not," the student leader said.
Earlier on 9 November, Sarjis Alam, a coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, said two thousand people did not sacrifice their lives in the July-August mass uprising solely for an election.
Yesterday, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus urged everyone to express their views on the election and reforms, while asking for patience to allow the interim government to complete necessary changes before holding polls to transfer power to an elected government.
