Shop owners protest market closure during lockdown
They formed a human chain in New Market area and demonstrated on the street
Several hundred members of New Market Shop Owners' Association on Sunday brought out a procession protesting the government's decision to keep markets closed during the lockdown to be enforced from Monday.
A faction of the association also demanded that the nationwide lockdown be withdrawn.
Shop owners and workers of New Market, Chandrima market, and Nurjahan market brought out the procession around 3pm. They chanted slogans demanding cancellation of the decision to keep markets shut.
They formed a human chain in New Market area and demonstrated on the street.
Solimur Rahamn, sub-inspector of New Market Police Station, told The Business Standard protesters had suddenly blocked a road.
"They left after law enforces talked to their association leaders," he added.
The government imposed the seven-day lockdown primarily as the Covid-19 situation has taken a very dangerous turn in the country.
