Appellate Division upholds HC order dismissing extortion cases against Tarique
A four-member Appellate Bench, led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, rejected the state’s leave to appeal petition challenging the High Court's decision today
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court order that dismissed four extortion cases filed against BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
A four-member Appellate Bench, led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, rejected the state's leave-to-appeal petition challenging the High Court's decision today (5 January).
Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R Haque represented the state during the hearing.
On 23 October 2024, the High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the verdict dismissing the four cases against Tarique.
These cases were filed by various individuals, accusing Tarique of extortion at Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh, and Dhanmondi police stations in the capital during the caretaker government in 2007.
The state filed a leave to appeal with the Appellate Division on Saturday, seeking a stay on the High Court order that dismissed four extortion cases against BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman in October last year.
