Teachers call for reinstatement of head teacher positions
A group of teachers has called for implementing a gazette to restore the position of head teachers in nationalised primary schools.
They pressed forth their demand today (10 October) during a press conference at the National Press Club under the banner.
"According to a gazette issued by presidential order in August 2013, a head teacher and four assistant teachers were to be appointed in each nationalised school. However, we have now been subjected to discrimination," said Humayun Kabir, convener of the Head Teacher's Unity Alliance.
He added, "Inclusion in the gazette is our constitutional right, and we strongly urge the interim government to enlist us as head teachers in the gazette."
In a written statement, the alliance's central representative, Golam Mostafa, said, "On 9 January 2013, the then-government nationalised 26,193 primary schools through a historic teachers' assembly.
"Although the same number of head teacher positions were supposed to be created, the gazette published for about 7,512 schools listed them as assistant teachers instead, due to the collusion of a former official of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education."
