DMP evicts illegal rickshaw lanes, repair shops on Green Road
During the drive, the traffic police seized around 61 rickshaws for illegal parking on the road or occupying footpaths for the repair shops.
Tejgaon traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police evicted illegal rickshaw parking and repair shops from the capital's Green Road today to ensure smooth traffic movement.
"We are committed to keeping this road free from rickshaws and illegal parking under the guidance of high-ups," Snehashish Das, assistant commissioner of Tejgaon Zone Traffic Police, said.
"To ensure maximum use, we are conducting raids on this road for two hours every day. And this will continue, along with creating awareness among the rickshaw pullers," he added.
The Green road connects Panthpath and Farmgate, facilitating the movement of thousands of people in the city.
A good number of government and educational establishments, including Pani Bhavan, the IBA hostel, the University of Asia Pacific, and several varsity coaching centres, are also located there.
Hundreds of rickshaws used to be parked along this busy road for a long time. Several temporary rickshaw repair shops and makeshift eateries had also been set up there, choking the road.
During the drive, the traffic police seized around 61 rickshaws for illegal parking on the road or occupying footpaths for the repair shops.
In the absence of the rickshaw lanes and the footpath occupying shops after the eviction drive, the road took on a different look.
"Earlier, our university bus could not turn properly while leaving or entering the hostel due to rickshaws. It could not even enter the road. Now, the situation has improved," Sudip Saurabh Guha, a student of IBA at Dhaka University, told journalists after the DMP's drive.
Monir Hossain, a resident of East Rajabazar expected that the police would continue their vigilance to keep the road free of traffic chaos while also ensuring hassle-free walkways.
