Bus route rationalization stalled
Dhaka South Mayor Taposh said they will have to start over as there is no headway into decisions taken previously
Dhaka South Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh Tuesday said consultants will be appointed for the feasibility study of bus route rationalization and bus terminal construction in Dhaka
However, the mayor neither gave any detail of their work plan, nor specified when the process will begin.
"We will start actions after the next meeting, likely to be held on November 10, after getting the study report by the consultants," Taposh told the journalists at Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Nagar Bhaban office after the 12th meeting of Bus Route Rationalization Committee.
Joint Convener of committee Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam was also present there.
"As there is no headway into decisions made in the previous 11 meetings, we will have to start over," said the DSCC mayor.
Taposh added, "But we, the two mayors, will work with utmost sincerity and dedication from now and the progress will be visible in the future."
The 10-member Bus Route Rationalization Committee was formed in 2018 to bring order in public transportation in the capital and reduce traffic congestion.
Meantime, Dhaka North Mayor Atiqul said they are prioritizing the scheme as 63% people of Dhaka use public buses to commute.
"We are discussing the issue since we [two mayors] assumed office. We are giving it utmost importance showing respect to the efforts of the late Mayor Annisul Huq. And a result will come soon, I can guarantee," added Atiqul.
The meeting was also attended by Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha Chairman Md Sayeed Noor Alam, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Md Abdur Razzak, Bangladesh Road Transport Owners' Association Secretary General Khandaker Enayet Ullah and senior officials of both the city corporations.
