Two gambling machines seized from city residential hotel
A customs intelligence team raided the Hobnob Coffee House and Chinese Restaurant and a nearby hotel in Uttara
A team from the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) seized two machines used for casino gambling in a raid at a restaurant in the capital's Uttara area on Thursday.
The team raided the Hobnob Coffee House and Chinese Restaurant and a nearby hotel on Gausul Azam Avenue in the afternoon, and confiscated two electric Mahjong machines, a type of gambling machine, said a press statement issued by the CIID.
A trader imported seven Mahjong machines under the name Ninad Trade International from China in July 2018, and did not pay proper duties on them.
The statement said that after import, the trader sold these gambling machines to Chinese people or firms.
Two of the gambling machines had been shifted to the hotel soon after the launch of the ongoing anti-corruption drive.
After examining the import documents for the machines, it was found that the importer evaded Tk285,000 in duties, read the statement.
During the raid on Thursday, customs intelligence also discovered that the restaurant owned by a Chinaman was a heaven for Chinese gamblers.
A customs intelligence team seized a Mahjong machine during a similar raid at a restaurant in the Banani area of the capital on Wednesday.
