A vegetable vendor who was shot by muggers attempting a robbery in the Kashimpur area of Gazipur, has died from his injuries.
Jahidul Islam, 62, passed away last night (12 September) while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Inspector Mohammad Mohiuddin of Kashimpur Police Station confirmed the incident, stating that Jahidul passed away at around 1am at DMCH.
Jahidul, a resident of Nandail, Mymensingh, was living in a rented house in the Hajibari area of Kashimpur, Gazipur, and sold vegetables at the Kashimpur Bazar.
According to Jahidul's son-in-law, Jahangir Alam, on Wednesday evening, jeweller Anup Kumar Dey was returning home after closing his shop, Mitu Jewellers. A group of muggers ambushed him, stealing his gold ornaments and cash. To instil fear, the muggers fired several rounds indiscriminately, one of which hit Jahidul in the hand and lodged in his abdomen.
Jahidul was initially rushed to Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Medical College Hospital, but due to a lack of available doctors, he was transferred to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.
As his condition worsened, he was referred to DMCH yesterday afternoon, where he underwent surgery but died shortly afterward.
Inspector Mohiuddin said no case has been filed yet, but the police are working to identify the culprits using CCTV footage.
Jahidul's family is expected to file an official complaint after his burial, the inspector added.
