Waiting for govt to disband RAB: Nur Khan Liton
“The involvement of the army in policing operations creates new and complex problems,” he also says
It is unacceptable to maintain activities of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in the society due to its involvement in extra-judicial killings, said Nur Khan Liton, a human rights activist and member of the inquiry commission on enforced disappearances.
"They [RAB] are incapable of serving the people. I am waiting for the government to disband the elite force," he said while speaking at a mass gathering at Lalonshah Muktamanch in Rajshahi today (21 December).
Earlier on 14 December, the commission submitted its first interim report to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, recommending that the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) be disbanded.
Victims of Awami League's "fascist oppression", including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, torture, and deaths in police custody participated in the mass gathering.
Sajjadur Rahman and Nabila Idris, members of the commission, were also present at the gathering.
Speaking at the event, Nur Khan Liton emphasised that policing duties should be entrusted solely to the police force.
"The involvement of the army in policing operations creates new and complex problems," he added.
Later, family members of victims of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and torture in police custody shared their harrowing experiences.
They demanded thorough investigations and trials for these heinous crimes.
Among others, Rajshahi University Vice-Chancellor Dr Farid Uddin Khan, Joint General Secretary of Krishak Dal Mahbooba Habiba, Mayer Daak organiser Sanjida Islam and coordinator Rimon Islam spoke at the event.
Meanwhile, a film exhibition titled 'Gum, Jaan O Joban' is being held at the same venue. Commencing today, the exhibition will continue until 3 January.
