Who are the new IGP and new DMP commissioner?
Their appointment comes following the removal of Md Mainul Islam and Md Mainul Hasan as the IGP and the DMP commissioner respectively
The ministry of Home Affairs today (20 November) appointed Baharul Alam as the new inspector general of police (IGP) and Sheikh Sajjat Ali as the new Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner.
They have been appointed on a contractual basis for two years, according separate notifications issued by the Ministry of Public Administration today (20 November).
Their appointment comes following the removal of Md Mainul Islam and Md Mainul Hasan as the IGP and the DMP commissioner respectively.
Previously, Baharul Alam was the head of the police's Special Branch (SB) and served at the police headquarters.
From 2009 to 2013, he served as the police liaison officer of the peacekeeping department at the United Nations headquarters. He was senior police advisor of the UN peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan in 2015.
Earlier, he served in Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo and Sierra Leone. After being twice deprived of promotions, he retired from service in 2020.
With his appointment as IGP, for the very first time in Bangladesh, a retired police official has been appointed as the police chief.
On the other hand, Sheikh Sajjat Ali started his police career with BCS 1984 batch. He served as deputy commissioner of DMP's Tejgaon Division.
He also served as superintendent of police of Lakshmipur. He later served as the deputy inspector general of Chattogram and Dhaka ranges. Besides, when the highway police was formed, he got the responsibility of DIG there.
Later, he worked as an additional IGP at the police headquarters.
Sajjat Ali lost his job during the Awami League regime. Recently, his job was reinstated by the interim government.
