E-commerce to create 5 lakh jobs in next 5 years: Palak
E-Cab has awarded e-Commerce Movers Award to 12 individuals and 100 organisations
In the next five years, the country's e-commerce sector will create around five lakh jobs and may turn into a key driving force of the economy.
State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak claimed this while addressing a programme organised on the occasion of distributing e-Commerce Movers Award.
E-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-Cab) organised the event at Purbachal Club in the capital on Sunday, marking its 6th anniversary. E-Cab president Shomi Kaiser presided over the award distribution event.
During the coronavirus period, e-Cab has provided all necessary services to the citizens, and has become a constant companion of the city dwellers, said Palak.
At the event, e-Cab awarded e-Commerce Movers Award to 12 individuals and 100 of e-Cab member organisations for special contributions during the Covid-19 pandemic.
At the event, 30 more organisations also received special accolades from e-Cab.
Highlighting various activities of e-Cab during the pandemic, Shomi Kaiser said, "During the Covid-19, e-commerce sector has witnessed a turnover of Tk3,000 crore in eight months. At present, about one lakh deliveries are being completed every day, while it is creating 50,000 new employment opportunities."
E-Cab member organisations have provided services to 60 lakh people, trained around 5,000 young entrepreneurs, and the overall digital transaction was worth Tk16,000 crore, she added.
E-Genius hunt – digital talent search programme
On the occasion of Mujib Year, from 16 November to 16 December, students of schools and colleges will be able to participate in this competition through their creative activities using the app sitting at home.
At the end of the competition, 1,000 students will be declared 'e-geniuses'.
Zunaid Ahmed Palak, in this regard, said, "The students are being deprived of any extracurricular activities while sitting at home for past eight months. This is probably the first time that their extracurricular activities have been performed at home using technology."
Speaking as the special guest, Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Mostafizur Rahman said that children of all schools and colleges of Dhaka division will be able to participate in the competition through their songs, poems, paintings or writings using the app.
"They will check through the app how they have performed the creative tasks. This is probably the first such competition in the country," said the divisional commissioner.
Secretaries of different ministries, senior secretaries and additional secretaries were also present at the event alongside e-Cab executive council members, members of various parliamentary standing committees, awardees, representatives of various organisations.
