Bangladesh confirms 21 more Covid-19 deaths, 1,508 new cases

Bangladesh confirmed 21 more deaths from the novel coronavirus in the 24 hours until 8am on Thursday.

The country's death toll from the virus now stands at 5,272, read a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In the 24-hour period, 1,508 people tested positive for Covid-19 and the number of novel coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 364,987.

Among the deceased, 16 were men and 5 were women. Moreover, 11 of them hailed from Dhaka, three from Chattogram, five from Rajshahi and two from Rangpur divisions. Eighteen of them died in different hospitals and three others at their respective residences.

In that period, 11,420 samples were tested in 108 labs across the country. With this, 1,959,075 samples have been tested in the country so far.

The latest day's infection rate is 13.20% of the total tests, although the overall rate in the country till date is 18.63%. The death rate stands at 1.44%.

During the 24-hour period, 1,591 patients were declared free of Covid-19, raising the total number of recoveries to 277,078 with a 75.91% recovery rate.The gender breakdown of Covid-19 victims shows that 4,079 of the total deceased were men, and 1,193 were women.

BSMMU doctor dies from Covid-19

Muhammad Hossain, associate Professor at the Department of Urology in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) died of Covid-19 on Thursday 12.30pm, said a press release issued by the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA).

Hossain was undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) in Square Hospital.

He was a student of the 25th batch of Chittagong Medical College and 56 years old at the time of his death.

According to the BMA, so far, 93 doctors have died of the novel coronavirus across the country.
