Banks to remain closed Saturday in polls areas
The Election Commission will hold by-elections for two parliamentary constituencies in Naogaon and Dhaka on Saturday
All branches of scheduled banks will remain closed on Saturday (October 17) in areas under Naogaon-6 and Dhaka-5 parliamentary seats, owing to by-polls, which will be held on that day.
The Bangladesh Bank issued a circular in this regard Wednesday. The central bank circular said the decision was taken in compliance with the demands of the Election Commission (EC).
It said, "As Saturday is a weekly holiday, the branches of the scheduled banks in the respective constituencies cannot be kept open, even with special arrangements."
The Naogaon-6 constituency fell vacant following the death of Awami League lawmaker, Israfil Alam, on July 28, while Dhaka-5 fell vacant following the demise of Awami League MP, Habibur Rahman Mollah, on May 6.
Naogaon-6 comprises of Raninagar and Atrai upazilas, while Dhaka-5 comprises of Dhaka South ward nos 48, 49, 50, Demra, Dania, Matuail and Sarulia.
The EC will hold the by-elections for the two parliamentary constituencies on Saturday as the Commission has a legal obligation to arrange a parliamentary by-election 90 days after the constituency concerned falls vacant.
