Expired cheques can be returned by August 31 for new ones
The finance ministry took the decision so that cheque beneficiaries do not get barred from collecting their dues.
Expired government department cheques that were issued in June of the 2019-2020 fiscal year can be returned to the authority by August 31 this year, said the Ministry of Finance in a circular on Wednesday.
The finance ministry took the decision so that beneficiaries of the cheques do not get barred from collecting their dues.
The circular signed by the joint secretary of the Finance Division, Shirajun Noor Chowdhury, said if cheques issued to pay salaries and allowances, pensions, general provident funds and travel expenses are expired, these can be returned within August to the authority that issued the cheques.
If those cheques are not cashed, the authority will issue new cheques.
In other cases, the departmental heads of ministries and agencies concerned have to appeal by August to the authority that issued the cheques and explain why those cheques were not cashed on time.
The authority concerned will issue new cheques after examining them, reads the circular.
