Islami Bank MD absent from office following resignation ultimatum by officers
A senior Islami Bank official said Mawla had been appointed as MD by the controversial S Alam business group
The managing director of Islami Bank Bangladesh, Muhammed Monirul Moula, has been absent from office since 19 December, after several "anti-discrimination officers" issued an ultimatum demanding his resignation.
Talking to The Business Standard yesterday, a senior Islami Bank official said Monirul was appointed as the managing director by the infamous S Alam group.
The official said, "During his tenure, the group allegedly siphoned off significant amounts of money from Islami Bank using fake entities."
"On 19 December, several officials gave him an ultimatum not to return to the bank. Since then, he has not come to the office," the official added.
An additional managing director of the bank, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "The MD's absence is due to internal issues of the bank."
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) recently filed a case against 58 individuals, including former Islami Bank Bangladesh chairman Ahsanul Alam, son of S Alam Group owner Mohammad Saiful Alam, and the bank's MD, Monirul Moula.
Monirul Moula could not be reached for comments over the phone.
