Bangladesh to import one lakh tonnes of rice from India and Pakistan
Of the total import, 50,000 tonnes of parboiled rice will be purchased from India and another 50,000 tonnes of white rice from Pakistan
The interim government has approved the import of 100,000 tonnes of rice from India and Pakistan at a total cost of Tk581.41 crore.
Of the total import, 50,000 tonnes of parboiled rice will be purchased from India and another 50,000 tonnes of white rice from Pakistan, according to a decision of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) taken at a meeting, chaired by Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, today (16 January).
The meeting approved the import following proposals from the Directorate General of Food.
As per the proposal, the parboiled (Atap) rice from Pakistan will be imported under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement.
The rice will be procured from the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) at a cost of Tk304.39 crore, excluding customs duty and VAT.
Each tonne of rice will cost $499.
On the other hand, the non-Basmati parboiled rice from India will be imported through an international open tender.
The supplier, M/s Gurudiyo Export Corporation Private Limited, will provide the rice under Package-6 at a rate of $454.14 per metric tonne.
This transaction is projected to cost Tk277.02 crore, as per the Ministry of Food's recommendation.
