UNIDO and DOE host an environmental seminar and beach clean up in Coxs Bazar
Today, Cox's Bazar Sea Beach hosted an environmental awareness seminar, followed by a plastic waste cleanup and distribution of campaign materials.
Presided over by Dr Zaki Uz Zaman, UNIDO Country Representative, the event featured Mr Jerome Stucki, Unit Chief, Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency, UNIDO (Vienna, Austria); Mr Salauddin, Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar; Dr Quamruzzaman, Director General, Department of Environment (DoE), Bangladesh; and representatives from Eco Club and BD-Clean.
Over 230 student volunteers from 15 schools, colleges, and madrasas, along with eight Eco-Clubs, participated in the cleanup, collecting 554 kg of non-biodegradable plastic waste. Commending their efforts, Mr. Jerome Stucki stated, "The world has much to learn from Bangladesh's emerging generation."

Dr Abdullah Al Mamun, National Project Director and Deputy Director, DoE, emphasised waste as a valuable resource in the circular economy, calling for sustainable plastic use and community engagement. Seventh-grader Wara Karim spoke on the growing awareness among youth, highlighting the expanding membership of Eco-Clubs.
Mr Solaiman urged students of all backgrounds to raise awareness against marine litter. At the same time, Mr Salauddin praised the youth's dedication, stating, "Today's children have proven their commitment to environmental protection. A circular economy with safer materials can lead to a healthier future."
Dr Quamruzzaman warned about plastic contamination: "Plastics are poisoning our bodies, even appearing in breast milk. This fight must start at home." Dr. Rana Pratap Singh, UNIDO Nepal, praised Bangladesh's innovation, particularly in AI, encouraging pride in its achievements.
Dr Zaki Uz Zaman highlighted the potential of plastic recycling, stating, "If developed properly, it could contribute 2.5% to GDP growth—benefiting both waste collectors and the industry."
In closing, Mr Jamir Uddin, Deputy Director, DoE Cox's Bazar, thanked the students and volunteers, saying, "You are our inspiration."
