Foreign nationals living in Bangladesh remitted $130.58 million from their earnings during the July-April period of the current fiscal year, Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali informed parliament today (24 June).
In response to a written question from Faridpur-3 Constituency Member of Parliament Abdul Kader Azad, the finance minister revealed that Indian nationals accounted for the largest share, remitting $50.60 million.
During the question-and-answer session presided over by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Mahmood Ali also noted that the Bangladesh Bank has no data regarding the incomes of foreign nationals.
Additionally, Chinese nationals remitted $14.56 million, Sri Lankans $12.71 million, Japanese $6.89 million, Koreans $6.21 million, Thais $5.30 million, British $3.59 million, Pakistanis $3.24 million, U.S. nationals $3.17 million, Malaysians $2.40 million, and citizens of other countries collectively remitted $21.92 million.
In response to another question from Abdul Latif MP, the finance minister said his ministry is taking various steps to curb inflation.
He attributed the mounting inflation to global commodity supply uncertainties, the devaluation of the local currency against the dollar, and domestic supply chain disruptions.
To address this economic crisis, the government has implemented multiple measures to keep prices within the purchasing power of the common people, he said.
