The new fiscal year 2019-20 has begun with a slight increase in the inflation rate. Consumer prices rose to 5.62 percent in July from 5.52 percent in June.
Planning Minister MA Mannan said that in August there was 5.42 percent inflation in food items and 5.94 percent in non-food items.
In July, inflation was 5.49 percent in rural areas and 5.88 percent in urban zones. The planning minister held floods and Eid-ul-Adha responsible for the spike in inflation.
The figures were revealed in the latest update by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). The planning minister sent it for publication after an Ecnec meeting on Tuesday at the NEC conference room in Dhaka.
