BGMEA to hold elections as per schedule
The decision came from BGMEA’s former presidents’ forum meeting held on Sunday night at Hotel Platinum Grand in the capital
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is going to hold its next election as per regular schedule.
The decision came from BGMEA's former presidents' forum meeting held on Sunday night at Hotel Platinum Grand in the capital.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi presided over the meeting as president of BGMEA's former presidents' forum.
Among others former presidents of BGMEA, Anisur Rahman Sinha, Mostafa Golam Quddus, Kutubuddin Ahmed, Quazi Moniruzzaman, Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez), Abdus Salam Murshedy, SM Fazlul Hoque, Md Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, Siddiqur Rahman and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam were also present at the meeting.
The former BGMEA president's forum meeting was held following an emergency board meeting of BGMEA, held on 20 December, which sought its opinion in regards to the decision to extend the tenure of the current committee for 3 to 6 months.
The current board sought the extension to finish some incomplete tasks.
After the meeting ended, former BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy said, "The former president's forum has decided that BGMEA will hold its next election as per regular procedure without any extension or consensus with any panel,"
Apparel entrepreneurs usually compete in BGMEA elections to get a position in the organisation's 35-member governing body under 2 panels of BGMEA registered members – Forum and Sammilita Parishad.
During the board meeting discussions, 6 members of Forum opposed the proposal to extend the tenure while members of Sammilita Parishad rejected the proposal and gave a note of dissent.
Later the board notified that it has come to a conclusion to extend the tenure of the current committee but will give a concrete decision once the former BGMEA president's forum gives its opinion regarding the matter.
In April last year, Rubana Huq was elected president from Forum to lead the association for the 2019-2021 term.
The next election is scheduled to be held at the end of March or in early April next year.
BGMEA, which has around 4,500 registered members, is run by a 35-member board of directors, including seven vice-presidents.
It should be mentioned that the BGMEA currently has 13 former presidents of whom only 3 have been elected from Forum.
