BGMEA opposition panel demands cancellation of current board
The letter of the opposition panel claimed that numerous ineligible factories, lacking trade licenses and not filing tax returns, were allowed to vote in the last election.
The Forum, the opposition panel of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has called for the dissolution of the current board and the establishment of an interim committee to oversee a free, fair, and credible election for the trade body.
According to a letter submitted to the commerce ministry, addressed to the commerce adviser, the forum alleged that the BGMEA election held in February this year was marred by irregularities, heavily influenced by the Sheikh Hasina-led government.
The letter claims that numerous ineligible factories, lacking trade licenses and not filing tax returns, were allowed to vote in the last election.
Additionally, individuals and entities not engaged in the apparel export business were granted voting rights.
In light of these issues, the Forum urged the commerce adviser and the interim government to intervene in order to safeguard the integrity of the garment sector.
