BGMEA urges customs authority to ease bond facilities in Chattogram

Leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) sought more cooperation from the Customs Bond Commissionerate in Chattogram to boost growth of the readymade garments (RMG) sector in the Chattogram region. 

Despite port and customs facilities in closer proximity, the garment factories are facing a crisis in the region due to infrastructural problems, they said.

In this situation, if the Customs Bond Commissionerate dealing with the RMG industry does not ease and expedite their services, many RMG entrepreneurs will have to shut down their factories.   

Syed Nazrul Islam, first vice president of BGMEA, made these observations when newly elected board members of the organisation paid a curtesy visit to AKM Mahbubur Rahman, commissioner of Customs Bond Commissionerate, Chattogram, on Wednesday, said a media statement. 

Many development projects, including special economic zones, are coming up in the Chattogram region, luring investments here. If the Customs Bond Commissionerate eases and speeds up their services, it would help industries grow further in this region, BGMEA leaders said.

During the meeting, Commissioner AKM Mahbubur Rahman assured the BGMEA delegation of easing their services to further boost the growth of the RMG sector in the Chattogram region.

Among others from the BGMEA, Vice President Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, Directors Mohammed Abdus Salam, M Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Tanvir Habib, AM Shafiul Karim (Khokon), M Ahsanul Hoq, and Meraj-E-Mostafa (Kaisar) were present during the visit.
