RMG workers block road at Banani demanding arrears

Workers of Afko Abedin Garments today blocked the main road in the capital's Banani Chairmanbari area in demand of their outstanding wages and reopening of the factory.
Around 150 agitated workers of the apparel factory took to the street around 11am on Monday and kept it blocked for three and a half hours.
Abdul Matin, a patrol inspector at Banani police station, said, "Like other factories, Afko Abedin Garments was shut down after the ongoing general holiday was declared to curb coronavirus spread. This factory is still closed, though many other garment factories have already reopened amid the shutdown."

"Workers blocked the road this morning. They are demanding their arrear salaries and allowances," Abdul Matin continued, "Bangladesh Garment Manufactures and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is also aware of today's protest. A team of police force from Banani police station is on the spot."
Meanwhile, Miltan Datta, sub-inspector of Banani Traffic Police Outpost, told The Business Standard that the agitating workers freed the road after three and a half hours of protest.
"We talked to the workers and the owner. BGMEA representatives also assured us that they would take measures to pay the workers' dues within a week. After getting the assurance, around 15O protesting workers left the main road," he added.
Jamila Akter, one of the agitated protesters, said they have not got their salaries for the last two months.
"They (the owners) will get stimulus from government but will not pay our salaries – this is a joke. We do not want to see this transgression anymore," she added.
