Turkish artist hangs 440 shoes showing number of women killed by their partners
The unusual installation aimed to draw public attention to the problem of domestic abuse.
Domestic violence is on the rise, and that is not in the subcontinent only. The issue of violence against women around the world seems more pressing today then ever, with many women suffering abuse, and in some cases death, at the hands of their partners.
To commemorate some of the women who died, Vahit Tuna from Turkey, an artist and graphic designer, hung 440 high heels around buildings in Instanbul, a pair for each woman killed by their husband in 2018.
The unusual installation aimed to draw public attention to the problem of domestic abuse whose intensity is yet to penetrate the collective psyche in many societies across the world. Since domestic violence is still kept shrouded in secrecy.

Two buildings featured the installation, one in Istanbul's Kabataş neighbourhood and the other in the Beyoğlu district. Vahit chose to spread the installation across an area of approximately 260 square metres on the outer wall on the building of Yanköşe, a not-for-profit art platform.
Instead of having his work displayed inside the building, Vahit wanted to catch the attention of not just gallery-goers but bystanders who pass by the central location in the city.
