Debapriya for assessing climate-related investments
Second chapter of Fair Finance Bangladesh launched
Debapriya Bhattacharya, head of a committee to prepare a white paper on the state of Bangladesh's economy and a distinguished fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue, has emphasised determining the scope and assessing climate-related investments.
Debapriya shared his thoughts during the "National Coalition Launch" of Fair Finance Bangladesh held at the Lakeshore Hotel in Dhaka's Gulshan today.
"This is a special opportunity for us to ensure accurate environmental assessment of climate-related investments. Alongside this, we must also prepare the market for a climate-conscious financial system. Evaluating how much participation and share our small entrepreneurs are getting in this market is a crucial consideration," he said.
Participants at the event discussed the importance of sustainable financing and responsible investment in the banking sector and financial institutions to achieve sustainable development goals and create necessary action plans to implement these objectives.
Mashrur Arefin, managing director of City Bank PLC, Mohammad Zakir Hossain Khan, managing director of Change Initiative, and Sadman Sakib Ahmed, national representative of Fair Finance Bangladesh, among others, spoke.
Through the event, the second chapter of Fair Finance Bangladesh, or Phase 2, was introduced. The new phase aims to establish greater transparency, accountability, and responsible financing in Bangladesh's financial sector.
Oxfam in Bangladesh, Participatory Research and Action Network, and the Democratic Budget Movement jointly organised the event. Through the active participation of these three organisations, a new alliance has been formed under the "Fair Finance Bangladesh Phase-2" and "Fair Finance Asia" initiatives.
Fair Finance International is an international civil society network of over 100 CSO partners and allies, coordinated by Oxfam Novib, that seeks to strengthen the commitment of banks and other financial institutions to social, environmental and human rights standards.
