Youths in Satkhira strike for the climate
The youths took part in the Fridays for Future movement, founded by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, on the occasion of World Environment Day
Youths in Satkhira led a climate strike, on Friday, to protect the biodiversity of the Sundarbans damaged by super cyclone Amphan and demand climate justice in the coastal areas of Bangladesh.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, around 50 young climate activists with placards in their hands expressed their demands taking part in Fridays for Future – a movement founded by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg.
The youths gathered on Chhota Chandipur Dam in Padmapukur union of Shyamnagar upazila and demanded the construction of a sustainable embankment through mass participation and quick rehabilitation of the damage caused by cyclone Amphan.

Taking part in the movement, SM Shahin Alam said climate change was having a very negative impact on the livelihoods of Bangladesh's coastal people.
"Recent super cyclone Amphan has left a devastating effect on the coastal people as many of them have lost their relatives, homes, and crops plus are at extreme risk of becoming climate refugees," he explained.
"Each cyclone leaves us a special message to protect the Sundarbans. It is high time we preserved its biodiversity by moving away from illegal land-grabbing, pollution, and environmentally degrading projects," he added.
Padmapukur union parishad chairman Advocate SM Ataur Rahman, union parishad member SM Saifullah, Muhtaram Billah, Obaidullah Mukul, SM Kamruzzaman, and Ashiq Billah participated in the event.
