Alienware, Cherry launch the world's first gaming laptops with mechanical keyboards

Alienware has partnered with Cherry to launch the "first true" gaming laptop with a mechanical keyboard. Alienware M15 R4 and M17 R4 laptops will now support Cherry MX mechanical keyboards from March 18 onwards. The upgrade to Cherry's mechanical keyboard will cost $150 (TK 12,700 approx).

Alienware in a blog post said that it has been working with Cherry for over three years now on creating a "binary mechanical switch experience." Both companies experimented with over 160 prototypes, and finally developed a 3.5mm ultra-low-profile design with stainless steel components. 

It's pretty low compared to the MX original and ML low profile which are 18.5mm and 11.9mm high, respectively. The design has been inspired by the doors of the DeLorean sports car. Alienware said the mechanical keyboard can deliver a full 1.8mm of key travel along with "absolute precision and wobble-free keystrokes."

Mechanical keyboards are known for their thick keys, and ASMR clicking sounds. Alienware assures gamers will experience all of this with the Cherry MX ultra-low-profile. The keyboard has also been designed to fit in the Alienware laptop without compromising on the size of the company's thinnest notebooks. The keys can also be customised for different tasks, and gamers can also toy around with the RGB backlighting.

The Cherry MX keyboards can be upgraded only on the Alienware M15 and M17 laptops. Launched last year, the Alienware M15 and M17 laptops come with the 10th gen Intel Core processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU, and up to 4TB of storage.
