Will Smith’s ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ to be rebooted into a gritty drama
Netflix, Peacock are among the platforms currently bidding on the project
Will Smith and Morgan Copper are teaming up to adapt 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' into a hard-hitting drama.
Based on a viral Youtube video by Morgan Cooper, the show will delve deep into the darker side of the plot of NBC's hit sitcom. With previous showrunners involved, and Will Smith himself set to be an executive producer, it's already getting traction.
Will Smith previously praised the idea saying, "brilliant idea, the dramatic version of The Fresh Prince for the next generation".
As reported by Variety, the project is currently being shopped to multiple outlets, including HBO Max, which is the streaming home of the original series.
"Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" propelled Will Smith's career. As he later went onto to star in many critically acclaimed films. Much notably, blockbusters the likes of "Independence Day," "Men in Black," "I Am Legend" and countless others.
Cooper will be co-write and direct the project. And Will Smith is attached to it as an executive producer along with Benny Medina, and original series creators Andy and Susan Borowitz.
Will Smith's own production house Westbrook Studios, and Universal Television will produce the project.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Netflix, Peacock are among the platforms currently bidding on the project.
