New rice with slightly lower price arrives at markets
Price of rice increases by Tk3-5 per kilogram in retail markets after they are bought from wholesalers
Farmers have started harvesting Aman paddy, as a result of which new rice has started to arrive at the markets in Dhaka.
The prices of the new arrivals are slightly lower than the older ones available at the markets, according to wholesalers and retailers.
"Price has decreased by Tk50 for every 50-kg sack of newly harvested rice", said Monoar Hossen, a retailer in Karwan Bazar kitchen market.
"The price will decrease once again when the new rice becomes more available. This is supposed to happen within 10-15 days," said Ismail Uddin, a wholesaler in the same market.
Ismail said wholesalers a week ago sold a 50-kg sack of coarse rice at Tk2,300, but now they are selling it at Tk2,250. The retailers are currently selling the same type of rice at Tk48-50 per kilogram (Tk2,400-2,500 per sack).
Al Habib, a wholesaler at Karwan Bazar, said currently the price of a sack of fine rice (Miniket) is Tk2,700-2,750 (Tk54-55 per kg), while the price of a sack of premium quality rice (Najirshail) is Tk2,800-2,900 (Tk55-58 per kg) in wholesale markets.
The price of rice increases by Tk3-5 per kilogram in retail markets after they are bought from wholesalers, said retailer Md Khalil.
Meanwhile, amid the price unrest in the onion market, new leafy onions are being found in the markets, but its price is a bit high.
"The leafy onion started coming a week earlier but it is still not available as per the demand. That is why its price is slightly higher," said Nuru Mia, a vegetable vendor.
"Now we are selling this for Tk50-60 per kilogram," he said adding that, "However, we suppose that this onion will be easier to get within a week and the price will decrease then."
Replying to a query, he said we bring this kind of onion from Faridpur and adjacent areas.
