Onion price hikes again

The price of onions has started to rise again in the local markets though several consignments arrived here from Pakistan and Egypt.

Onion prices was decreasing till last week after seeing a steep rise in the previous couple of weeks.

At the end of the last week, onions were sold at Tk200 per kilogram, but as of today the price climbed up to Tk250. 

The government's import policy, market control, nothing could stop the rise of the onion price.

Different sellers in various markets of the capital are selling onions at different prices.

Local onions are being sold at Tk210 to Tk250 a kg while imported onions are being sold at Tk150-180 per kg.

Abdur Razzak, an onion seller in Rampura Bazar, was asking for Tk220 per kg and however, the seller of Anwar store, just beside Razzak's shop, was asking for Tk240 a kg.

Another seller of Al-Amin store refused to sell below Tk250 per kg.

At Karwan Bazar, onions are being sold at Tk220 per kg in the wholesale market, which was Tk190 few days ago. Wholesalers are claiming that onions are out of stock.

Ashraf, a wholesaler of the market, told The Business Standard, "Only one vehicle carrying 100 sacks of onions arrived here this morning, earlier 3 to 4 vehicles used to come here."

Shyambazar is selling onions comparatively at lesser price than Karwan Bazar but wholesalers as they do not have much supply of the local onions. They are selling imported onions from Myanmar and Pakistan at Tk170-180 per kg. The local onion sellers are selling at Tk200 to Tk 210.

The scallions are still being sold in the market at high price. Scallions are being sold at Tk130-150 per kg in different markets.
