Army reaches scene as dozens injured in clash between students of Polytechnic Institute, Butex
Tejgaon Industrial Police said they are working to find out the reason behind the incident
A team of the Bangladesh Army reached the scene after at least a dozen people were injured after a clash broke out between students of the Dhaka Polytechnic Institute and the Bangladesh University of Textiles (Butex) in the Saat Rasta area of the capital's Tejgaon.
The fight started in the evening today (24 November), after students of the Polytechnic Institute's Latif Hall allegedly got into an argument over the entry of a suspected Bangladesh banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist into the Aziz Hall of Butex, said locals and police.
Since then, the fight on the street in between the students of the two educational institutions have been going on.
Chase-counter-chase and hurling of brickbats were continuing till the filing of this report at 11:30pm.
The army reached the spot at around midnight and worked with the police to bring the situation under control by dispersing the students.
Tejgaon Industrial Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shamimur Rahman said the scuffle continued for at least an hour before army and police managed to control the situation.
"The police is still trying to find out the reason behind the incident," he added.
The injured and were admitted to the nearest private hospital.
Professor Sayeduzzaman, a teacher at Butex, confirmed the incident, but could not provide the reason as to what led to the clash.
Last month, the interim government banned the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) as a terrorist organisation.
