Husband filed false case using influence of ex-minister Kamal, ex-DB chief Harun, Actress Romana alleges

Bangladeshi actress Romana Islam Swarna yesterday (2 December) alleged that her husband filed a false case against her using influence of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former head of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) Harun or Rashid.

Romana was arrested in 2021 in a case filed by her husband Kamrul Hasan Jewel on charges of fraud, embezzlement, and attempted murder. 

In a press briefing at the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB) in the capital's Segunbagicha, the actress claimed that her husband filed the case to stop her from getting a divorce and continue acting.

"I learned that he had paid a large sum of money to DB Harun to arrest me. After spending a month and a half in jail, I was granted bail on the condition that I would not be able to get a divorce," she said.

Romana said she met Jewel through a friend. Later, they got married in 2019. 

"Before marriage, he [Jewel] said I could continue acting after marriage. But after marriage, he did not allow me to act. He threatened me at various times through Awami League leaders. 

"Alongside false cases, it was rumoured that I was married 28 times, which is totally baseless," Romana said.

Regarding her husband's power, the actress said, "Former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, late Fazle Rabbi Miah, and DB Harun used to cooperate with Jewel. 

"Jewel is mainly involved in the hundi business. Kamal and Harun used to smuggle money abroad through Jewel," she further alleged.
