Akhtar Ahmed appointed as EC senior secretary
The government today (5 December) appointed Akhtar Ahmed as senior secretary of the Election Commission on a two-year contractual basis.
The Ministry of Public Administration in a notification stated Akhtar Ahmed has been appointed under Section 49 of the Government Service Act, 2018, on the condition that he must step down from any other professions, businesses or employment with any government, semi-government, or private organisations.
On Tuesday, Shafiul Azam, who had been serving as the EC secretary, was made an officer on special duty. Yesterday was his last working day at the EC.
Akhtar Ahmed is a 1982 batch officer of the BCS Administration cadre. He last served as joint secretary (administration) at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and retired in 2015.
His ancestral home is in Khulna. Akhtar studied Economics at Rajshahi University and pursued further education at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka.
Upon being appointed as senior secretary, Akhtar Ahmed said, "The interim government has entrusted me with a new responsibility. I hope to fulfil my duties at the EC Secretariat with honesty and dedication."
