2 killed, 10 injured as two AL groups clash in Narsingdi
Locals and police say the supporters of a Jubo League leader and an Awami League leader clashed over establishing dominance in the area
Two people, including a union parishad member, have been killed and at least 10 others injured after two groups of Awami League (AL) supporters clashed over establishing dominance in Narsingdi's Raipura Upazila.
People in both groups were seen carrying local weapons, including sharp weapons, during the clash in the upazila's Methikanda area this morning (7 December).
Confirming the incident, the district's Additional Superintendent of Police Kalim Ullah said upon receiving information, police and army rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.
Locals and police identified the deceased as Manik Mia, 55, and Kalpana Begum, 32. Manik was a member of the current Chanderkandi Union Parishad and Kalpana was a former member.
The 10 injured, who include people from both groups, were admitted to a local hospital.
According to locals and police, the clash followed longstanding tension between supporters of Methikanda Jubo League leader Abid Hasan Rubel and the AL's Raipura municipality unit Vice-President Harun Or Rashid over establishing dominance in the area.
They said both Manik and Kalpana were Rubel's followers.
"The situation is calm now. But we are yet to confirm how the clash started," said police official Kalim.
Meanwhile, Raipura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Jabbar said Manik, who was also Rubel's uncle, recently took shelter at the house of Bashir Uddin, a member of the union parishad's ward No 9, reports UNB.
Harun's supporters reportedly dragged Manik out of the house and stabbed him in the courtyard, leaving him dead on the spot. They also stabbed Kalpana to death in the same courtyard.
