SC upholds HC verdict that scrapped 5 labour cases against Yunus
The lawsuits originated in 2019 when three recently terminated employees of Professor Yunus' organisation, Grameen Communications, filed cases at Dhaka's Third Labour Court
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court's decision to scrap five labour cases filed against Nobel Laureate and interim government's Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
A bench led by Senior Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam rejected the state's petition challenging the earlier High Court verdict today (8 December).
Additional Attorney General Anik R Haque represented the state in court, while Advocate Mustafizur Rahman Khan appeared for Yunus.
On 24 October, the High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain scrapped the cases by resolving the rule issued earlier in this matter.
Following this, the state appealed to the Appellate Division.
The lawsuits originated in 2019 when three recently terminated employees of Professor Yunus' organisation, Grameen Communications, filed cases at Dhaka's Third Labour Court.
The complainants were Abdus Salam, Shah Alam, and Emranul Haque.
In the same year, two additional cases were filed by Hossain Ahmed and Abdur Gafur.
Professor Yunus subsequently petitioned the High Court in 2020 to dismiss these cases. The High Court had issued a rule at that time and, following separate hearings, passed its verdict on 24 October this year.
