City’s Premier League hearing concludes, verdict expected in 2025
Despite their current form and the ongoing legal battles, Manchester City remain determined to uphold their reputation as one of the premier clubs in world football.
Manchester City's long-awaited hearing into 115 alleged breaches of Premier League rules has reportedly concluded, though a verdict is not anticipated until 2025.
According to reports on 9 December, closing arguments were presented to an independent panel on 6 December at London's International Dispute Resolution Centre. The case opened on 16 September.
The English champions face allegations of 80 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, alongside 35 charges of failing to cooperate with a Premier League investigation. City, however, strongly deny the accusations, maintaining their innocence and pledging to clear their name.
Potential sanctions, if the club is found guilty, could include fines or even relegation from the Premier League. Everton and Nottingham Forest both faced points deductions last season for breaching the league's profit and sustainability regulations.
Since Sheikh Mansour's takeover in 2008, Manchester City have become a dominant force in English football. They have claimed eight of the last 13 Premier League titles, including a record-breaking four consecutive championships. The club also secured their maiden Champions League trophy in 2023.
However, their success has been overshadowed by accusations of financial misconduct. City are accused of failing to provide accurate financial records, including sponsor revenues and salary details of players and managers. Further allegations include violations of UEFA and Premier League financial sustainability rules.
The charges were brought by the Premier League in February 2023, but proceedings before the independent commission were delayed until this year. Should the panel find City guilty of any or all charges, the club is expected to appeal, potentially delaying sanctions further.
On the pitch, Pep Guardiola's side are currently enduring a rough patch, managing just one win in their last nine matches across all competitions.
