Dhaka’s rail link with rest of country snapped for 2.5hrs for workers wage protest
Workers employed temporarily in the Narayanganj-Dhaka-Tongi division claimed they had not received their salaries for the past six months
Train services between Dhaka and the rest of the country resumed 2.5 hours after temporary railway workers blocked the FDC rail crossing at Karwan Bazar, demanding unpaid wages.
Workers employed temporarily in the Narayanganj-Dhaka-Tongi division claimed they had not received their salaries for the past six months.
The protesting workers have been working as gatekeepers, waymen, and assistants without pay for six months. There are around 7,500 temporary workers across the country facing the same situation.
The workers warned of a nationwide blockade if their demands were not met.
The blockade began around 10:30am, causing disruptions to both passenger and freight trains.
The protest ended later in the day after assurances from railway authorities to clear their dues by Thursday.
Confirming the resumption of train services, Kamalapur Railway Station Manager Sazzadur Rahman said, "The protesters have left, and rail communication has resumed."
