Govt will not allocate any further funds for unpaid Beximco group wages, says Finance Adviser Salehuddin
It was also decided that the government will approve new gas connections for industries, provided they are willing to pay bills at the same rate as the LNG import cost
The government will not provide any further funds for the unpaid wages of Beximco Group's workers, Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed stated today (19 December) at the Ministry of Finance.
Speaking at a briefing, he said, "Previously, we allocated funds for Beximco Group's labour wages, and the money was transferred to the workers' bank accounts. If we hadn't done that, they would have blocked the roads for a longer time."
Earlier last month, the government decided to grant Tk60 crore in loans to Beximco Group in order to end the labour unrest of the workers of the company's factories centring unpaid October wages.
This week, Beximco Group laid off 30,000 workers from its 16 apparel factories in Gazipur Industrial Park, citing a lack of orders and banking support following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina's government in August.
The layoffs represent 75% of the company's workforce at the industrial park, leaving 10,000 workers in Beximco Limited's Textile and PPE divisions.
At the event, Fouzul Kabir Khan, power and energy adviser, said the government will approve new gas connections for industries, provided they are willing to pay bills at the same rate as the LNG import cost.
