Pirates loot furnace oil worth Tk3.25cr from ship in Dhaleswari River
Armed pirates looted around 3.65 lakh litres of furnace oil worth over Tk3.25 crore from a ship near the confluence of the Dhaleshwari and Shitalakshya rivers in the Munshiganj-Narayanganj border area early Friday (10 January).
Muktarpur River Police Station Officer-in-Charge Lutfor Rahman confirmed that a case was filed at Munshiganj Sadar Police Station regarding the incident on Friday night.
The incident occurred when the ship, MV B Zaman, loaded with furnace oil, was en route from Narayanganj to Gazipur.
According to sources, pirates boarded the vessel from a trawler and took control of the ship by holding the crew hostage at gunpoint. They tied black cloth over the crew members' heads and locked them in the engine room. After looting the oil, they abandoned the ship near Meghna Bridge before fleeing.
Upon being informed, law enforcement tracked the ship's location using mobile tracking technology and recovered the vessel.
Munshiganj Sadar Police Station's Investigation Officer Sajib Dey said efforts are underway to arrest those involved in the hijacking.
The ship, operated by Kingfisher Shipping Company, was transporting furnace oil from Summit Power in Narayanganj to Summit Power in Gazipur, sources said.
