'Top-listed human trafficker' arrested at Ctg airport
The arrest followed information provided by the airport's National Security Intelligence (NSI) team
The Airport Immigration Police arrested a suspected human trafficker, Iftekharul Alam Roni, at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram yesterday evening (11 January).
Roni, a resident of Feni, was apprehended at approximately 8pm while preparing to board Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-147 to Dubai, scheduled to depart at 8:50pm.
The arrest followed information provided by the airport's National Security Intelligence (NSI) team.
Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, public relations officer at the airport, said that Roni has been identified as a key ringleader in a human trafficking network. He added that Roni is classified as a top-listed criminal by the NSI.
Roni faces two cases under the Human Trafficking Act 2012. One case has been registered against Roni at the Human Trafficking Crime Suppression Tribunal No 2 under the jurisdiction of the District and Sessions Judge in Cumilla.
Another case was filed against him on 11 January at Brahmanpara Police Station in Cumilla under several sections of the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act.
The Chattogram Airport Immigration Police have also filed a case against Roni, and authorities are continuing investigations into his suspected involvement in human trafficking.
